To celebrate, Yelena McManaman, co-author of Moebius Noodles: Adventurous Math for the Playground Crowd, has offered a copy of the book in a celebratory giveaway. The book contains math games and activities for very young children (infants to kindergarten age). The author writes,
"It is not a book about numbers or shapes or counting since we felt there are already so many wonderful books about these subjects. Instead, our book explores math topics such as symmetry, functions, sets and quantities, and grids. We believe that such advance concepts can be understood and loved by even very young children. We believe that children are born mathematicians and it is our responsibility as parents and educators to support and develop their mathematical minds, not just mathematical skills."

This sounds just the sort of approach I take to math. It would be lovely to have some new ideas and material to work with. We would love to add this to our bookshelf.
ReplyDeleteI would love the book because it would really help me out fall semester when I begin my practicum. Junior year focuses on Pre-K and Kindergarten. I would love to share it with my professors who are all advocates for constructivism and play-based learning. The book sounds like an awesome resource!

ReplyDeleteI would love this book because I just completed my Masters and studied how guided play effects Geometry achievement, and now am passionate about play based math ideas. I agree kids are much more capable of understanding advanced mathematical ideas, than we think!
ReplyDeleteThis book would be a great asset to my tutoring business and for my own boys. I have seen my own boys absorb information that I thought was too advanced, but I've learned they are willing to learn just about anything! They've got the curiosity bug inside. I love it!
